The Bulgarian Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova presented Bulgaria’s progress towards euro area membership in front of the Eurogroup members today. Minister Petkova said that with its prudent fiscal policy Bulgaria had deserved its euro area membership a long time ago, that was why we expected this to happen on 1 January 2026. The Bulgarian Finance Minister underlined that the preliminary assessments gave us confidence that we would meet all the nominal convergence criteria. In view of this, and in accordance with the decision of the National Assembly of 2024, Bulgaria would make a formal request to the European Commission and the European Central Bank for extraordinary convergence reports on the grounds of Article 140 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU by the end of February 2025.

The Eurogroup countries confirmed their continued support for Bulgaria’s ambition to introduce the euro.
