CONSOLIDATED GENERAL GOVERNMENT DEBT DATA FOR Q2 OF 2017 AND FINAL DATA FOR 2016

The consolidated general government debt amounts to BGN 26,662 million, or 27.7% of GDP, as of the first half of 2017. Compared to the level of BGN 27,322, or 29% of GDP, reported as of end-2016, the debt has dropped by BGN 660 million. According to Eurostat data, even in Q2 of 2017 the Republic of Bulgaria retains its top position among the EU Member States with the lowest level of indebtedness, with just Estonia (8.9%) and Luxembourg (23.4%) ahead of it. The low levels reported are well below the limit of 60% of the Maastricht convergence criterion.
